RACHEL BERGERET

Born in 1975 in Saint-Martin-d’Hères, Rachel Bergeret is a French visual artist. After twelve years in the Paris fashion industry, she turned to visual art, bringing with her an intimate understanding of clothing, movement and silhouette.

In 2009, she created Midinette, her emblematic heroine. Her name recalls the young Parisian seamstresses who once left the couture workshops at midday. Free, elegant and unapologetically feminine, Midinette embodies a woman who refuses to be confined and dares to step out of the frame.

Fabric might have been the natural continuation of her former profession. Yet Rachel Bergeret chose paper instead, an ancestral and universal material in which every fold preserves the memory of a gesture. She shapes, pleats and crumples it until it acquires the movement and fluidity of fabric.

Against backgrounds entirely gilded with gold leaf, her suspended figures are dressed in paper, silk ribbons, crystals and fragments of packaging from the world of luxury. Removed from their original purpose, these elements become witnesses to our time and the way we consume. Through them, the artist seeks to preserve the trace of objects whose forms may evolve or disappear, passing their memory on to future generations.

Her work expresses an intentional tension between her fascination with beauty and her perspective on the excesses of consumer society. It also carries the imprint of haute couture, its exacting standards, its craftsmanship and its devotion to beautifully finished work.

Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, Gustav Klimt, Toulouse-Lautrec and Edmond Kiraz, Rachel Bergeret has developed a distinctive universe at the intersection of fashion, sculpture and contemporary art.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, from Parisian luxury hotels to galleries and art fairs in Miami, Palm Beach, the Hamptons, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
